I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day who is coming into Toronto to do readings during the week of the Silver Birch/Blue Spruce etc ceremonies. She was pondering whether to come in a couple of days prior to her readings just for the hotel room. I can relate! I LOVE writing in hotel rooms. Nothing to clean up, no one to cook for, no phones ringing.
Most of my novels have been written either in a hotel room or in our cozy quiet place in ski country.
When I’m home I do the business of writing. When I’m away, I write.
What about you?
You know, I think I’d like to write when I’m away, but bringing my laptop is just another thing to lug, so I don’t take it with me. Maybe if someday I get my dream computer – one of those thin, practically weightless Sony VAIOs that could fit in my purse and have like 20 hour batteries – I’d write everywhere! 🙂
I think benefit from having a place to “go to work” separate from where we blog, or otherwise use the Internet. Sadly, I don’t have this, which is why on any given day I tend to be all over the place, literally, and metaphorically speaking.

Well…I don’t ever get away without the kids, but a weekend holed up in a hotel room all by myself sounds like absolute bliss. Does it include room service? Oh, and those little chocolates they put on your pillow, huh, huh?
I’m taking the girls to Cape Breton for March Break. Sounds cruel, but two weeks away from hubby with no need to socialize once the kids are in bed should make for some good writing.
Oh, and yes, August in Cape Breton too. You might ask, why do I even bother living in Ontario? Good question.

Anita! A bonus of going to visit my parents is no internet access. Join me! We can go hiking on the eco-trail, beach comb, go lobster fishing with my dad…oh wait, the idea was to get some writing done…
Darn these fenagling distractions!
Hélène that sounds fabulous! Actually, if a grant comes through I was planning a trip to Cape Breton late August. Fingers crossed–I LOVE the thought of hiking the eco-trail, beach combing, lobster fishing…it’s all research, right 🙂

Hi Marsha,
Oooh. I love hotel writing. I don’t do that very often though. It’s usually wherever I feel like sitting with my laptop. Today, it’s at the kitchen table and the kids are at school, so it’s quiet like a hotel. {g}
I’ve learned to tune out the piles lying around and the to-do lists. That stuff eventually gets done. I’ve written 250 words today and still going.
