Sounds kind of strange, this urban poling stuff but I tried it this morning and it’s great. It doesn’t feel substantially different in terms of energy expenditure than plain fast walking, yet it burns more calories and exercises the upper body. Neat.

And you didn’t feel like, well, a tool doing it? Hee. Hee. 😉
Yes, Maggie, it does look rather silly. Fortunately, there are other people on our walking trails doing it, so they looked silly first.
I bet you’re going to feel it in your arms tomorrow!
Looks like a lot of fun to me. I love walking and hiking.

Hi Hélène,
Surprisingly, my arms weren’t sore at all this morning. Then again, I do weight training three times a week in addition to my 3 to 5 ten kilometer brisk walks a week.
The other nice thing about these poles is that I have a weapon to fight off nasty dogs (or their owners) with.
Marsha:
Looks cool, but I don’t walk fast enough.

Not fast enough? Anytime I’ve been with you, you’re pretty darned speedy!

Hello Marsha – i just came across your message by accident. I am one of the owners of Urban Poling in Vancouver and i am just thrilled that you are enjoying Nordic walking so much. …not sure where you are in Canada but if you are interested – GoodLife Fitness will be running urban poling classes this fall at their clubs across Canada.
Have fun with your urban poles and get your friends evolved, the health and fitness benefits can not be beat! 🙂

Re: Urban Poling
Hi Graham,
I’m really enjoying the poles. I used them on three 10k walks this week and they’re great!
