Guest interview — Darby from Facing Fire

Hello Calla People!

 

My name is Darby Christopher, and Marsha has kindly invited me to hang out here on her blog pages for the day. I’m cruising around and through the internets this month, celebrating the launch of my new book. It’s called FACING FIRE.

 

FACING FIRE picks up the story of what happened to me after the magical summer that you may have read about in A WALK THROUGH A WINDOW.  Both books tell the story of how many different Canadians came to Canada. And while Marsha’s stories are metaphorical windows through time – in my stories I have to hop through a literal window to find my way into the past.

 

But I don’t do this alone. In fact, my author kc dyer has had to do a lot of hopping herself, just to get me out into the world. And you know what? Her very first book, SEEDS OF TIME, made the leap from the slush-pile into publication due in no small part to some inspiring words from Marsha Skrypuch herself.

 

Marsha once told kc that she’d had more than 100 rejections before she got her first book accepted. At first, kc blinked a little and shook her head in disbelief. 100 rejections? How could anyone stand that much pain? But Marsha nodded SO wisely that kc took her story to heart. So much so, in fact, that kc challenged a friend [who was also trying to sell a book] to RACE to 100 rejections. In the end, the race had a happy ending. But not after five rejections, or even ten. Not after twenty rejections. It took kc dyer twenty-seven rejections before her first book was accepted.

 

Each time she was rejected, she read the letter, then cried a little. And after that – she cleaned up the manuscript, listening to the advice she’d been given and tried again. In the end, it took more than a year and half of querying, re-writing and querying again.

 

But if you ask her – she’d say it was worth every box of kleenex.
