Good news!

Yesterday, Sharon Brooks, organizer extraordinaire of Kids Can Fly and also the key fundraiser for Brantford Book Camp, called with good news. We have received funding from the Ontario Arts Council for this summer’s Book Camp!!! This makes everything so much easier to plan. No scurrying around, asking for little donations here and there. We provide this camp to kids for a mere $50 for the week (fee waived altogether in special cases), but it costs something like $200 per child for us to put this camp on. Thank you, Ontario Arts Council! You have made many aspiring young writers’ dreams come true!

And then today, I got an email from my agent letting me know that the contract for I Am Aram (the sequel to Aram’s Choice) has come through. Muriel Wood will be doing the illustrations for this one too. She is such a joy to work with and I’m really pleased that she’ll be able to start on this new one as soon as she’s finished the illustrations for the first. The tentative publication date is fall 2007.

Yippee!!!

      1. Yes, there’s going to be a Book Camp in London again! And I get to be the author liaison person again too!

I’m not going to OLA, though. My new book is just at the copy-edit stage now, so there’s no real reason to go. I’ll be at Book Expo, though! It’s going to be the day after my book launch. 🙂

        1. That’s great, Maggie!

We have some new volunteers this year, so I’m going to be concentrating more on the adult Book Camp. I’ve already selected all the speakers for both camps and we have a wonderful venue — the Laurier Brantford Student Centre — which is a brand new building with state-of-the-art audio facilities. You have been fortunate with London Book Camp facilities-wise.

          1. You have an adult book camp too? That’s great!

Hey, if you’re ever short on presenters for the kid’s book camp, don’t forget about me. I don’t mind driving to Brantford, and I love doing workshops with kids. 😀

          2. Hi Maggie!

Yes, we’re doing an adult book camp from 1pm til 4:30pm from Monday til Friday during the week of August 21st. It’s for aspiring adult and children’s writers. It should be a really neat week but an interesting juggling act for me.

And I won’t forget about you as a presenter. As you know, we fit presenters together like a jigsaw puzzle. This year we were leaning towards people who wrote for both adults and kids as much as possible. Barb is doing the keynote on Friday.

  1. Congrats on getting the grant for Book Camp!!! I know it’ll make a big difference not only for you, but also for the kids who get to take part.

And what terrific news about the next book – I’m just so excited for you about that! Muriel has done some great work on the first book, and it’ll be nice to have the continuity with the sequel.

By the way, Eric had a guest speaker in his kid lit class today – a Collene Ferguson, the regional officer for the Manitoba CCBC. She has your name in a list of previous guests at Winnipeg Children’s Literature Roundtable, and when Eric mentioned that I knew you, she said some nice things about you and your work, that you’re a really nice woman and a really good writer. Just thought I’d pass it on – Eric was really excited to see your name on the list!

    1. Hi Julie,
Thanks!! We’re really thrilled about the grant approval. I’m also pleased about the Aram sequel. I was hoping that it would come out fairly soon after the first because the two books complete each other.

That’s neat about Colleen Ferguson visiting Eric’s class. The Winnipeg Children’s Literature Roundtable is a great group of educators, librarians and book-involved people.
